Description of Workshops

All workshops are developed to specifically meet the needs of the participants. Keynote presentations on motivation are also available.

1. Managing Today’s Classroom – A Positive, Practical Approach To Discipline
(K - 12) (One or two-day seminar)

This seminar will provide the participants with practical, proven strategies that can be used immediately for developing a complete classroom management plan. Participants will learn short-term intervention strategies that will help them deal with difficult, non-compliant students and long-term strategies to help bring about change.

Spencer Henry does not represent these experts, but has extensively studied the philosophies and practices of Glasser, Adler and Dreikurs. From these experts and his forty years of experience, he has developed practical ideas to help teachers build self-discipline in their classrooms and school.

2. Discipline - A Problem Solving Approach: Using Class Meetings to Teach Problem Solving, Conflict Resolution, Character Education, Anger Management, and Bullying Prevention
(Elementary, special needs teachers, middle schools with advisee advisor / or home base programs)
(One-day seminar)

Classroom Meetings are an effective strategy for helping to develop a safe school. It teaches all students the essential skills needed to be successful in life; i.e. conflict resolution, problem solving, social skills, inter-personal skills, communication skills, tolerance, decision making and self worth. It helps children learn to become responsible and accountable for their actions. Class Meetings develop an environment where children’s basic needs are met: safety and security, belonging and significance.

This seminar will help take the teacher out of the roles of police, judge, jury and executioner. It will provide the participants with the necessary skills to develop a caring environment based on mutual respect where positive discipline can be incorporated. Participants will learn a step-by-step approach for incorporating this outstanding strategy.

3. Practical Strategies For Working Successfully With Difficult, Non-Compliant and At-Risk Students
(K – 12) (One or two-day seminar)

As society has changed, so have our clientele. There are more difficult, non-compliant and at-risk children coming to school than ever before. As educators, we have a lot of questions about dealing with these students:

“How can I teach when students are irresponsible and disrespectful?” “How do I deal with students who say, ‘I don’t care.’” “What do I do when they push my button?” “What do I do when I have more than one at-risk student?” “How do I deal with disrespectful students without losing credibility with my other students?” “What teaching strategies can I use to help at-risk students become successful?” “How can I get my students to become more responsible?” “How can I avoid conflict and power struggles with challenging students?” “When and where do I go for help?”

This seminar will answer these and many more questions for working successfully with difficult, non-compliant and at-risk students.

4. New Teacher Induction Workshops on Classroom Management
(New teachers K – 12) (One or two-day seminar)

This workshop is designed to help new teachers acquire survival skills and a system for developing positive classroom management. Strategies for preventing discipline problems will be taught. Included are short-term strategies for dealing with misbehavior and how to stay out of confrontations. The participants will learn how to develop positive relationships with students. They will also learn how to help students resolve problems and bring about change in their behavior. Start your teachers off with an opportunity to be successful.

5. Developing a School-Wide Discipline Plan
(K – 12) (One or two-day seminar)

This workshop is designed to help school administrators or school committees evaluate and develop their building discipline plans. It will help the participants assess their present plan and needs. A school-wide discipline plan includes a belief system, procedures and strategies.

6. A Workshop For Support Staff - How To Positively Interact With Students
(Classroom aids, cafeteria aids, bus drivers) (Half-day or full-day presentation)

The number of part time or full time non-professional people working in our schools is increasing. Most of these people have no training in dealing with misbehaving children.

This workshop is designed for instructional aides, cafeteria aides, recess aides or bus drivers. It will help them to deal with students in a positive way.

This workshop can be adapted to first-line supervisors, secretaries or other support staff on how to deal with difficult people (students, parents or other colleagues).

7. A Program for Parents – Helping Your Children to Become Responsible
(Parents K – 12) (One and one half to two-hour presentation)

How many times as educators have we said, “These kids are not responsible. What are their parents doing?” Think about this: To drive a car, you must take a test and demonstrate driving skills. What skills or training do you need before you can become a parent?

How often have you heard parents say, “I don’t know what to do.” We have all seen parents in a grocery store, a doctor’s office or at a fast food restaurant demonstrating poor parenting skills or unable to control their children?

Parents of both good and bad kids need parenting skills. This program is designed to help provide parents with additional skills needed to deal with today’s children.

8. Differentiated Intervention – Practical Instructional and Behavior Strategies for Working Successfully with Difficult, and Special Needs Students
(K – 12) (One day seminar)

In education, we are faced with greater challenges than ever before.  There are more difficult, non-compliant and special-needs students in our classrooms.  The law requires that no child be left behind.  The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004 (IDEA 2004) requires that we provide a positive behavioral support system.  These two initiatives don’t tell us how, just that we must do it.

This seminar will provide you with dozens of practical, doable instructional and behavioral strategies to help you meet these initiatives and become successful in motivating and managing today’s students.

What Administrators Have Said ...

“Thank you for energizing my faculty! Your presentation was entertaining and insightful. Following your staff development, my teachers could not stop talking about your session. Your message was meaningful to our beginning teachers, as well as our veteran teachers. Thank you for providing our staff with practical, doable, strategies designed to enhance our effectiveness.”
Dave Sovine, Principal, Monacan High School, Richmond, VA

“I am happy to report that after our staff heard Spencer Henry and started using his concepts and strategies, our school climbed to a record high status. The next year, by continuing to use his methods, went even higher to exemplary status. We truly feel that our academics have grown because of what Mr. Henry taught us. Our children feel valued. We have created a community of pride and power over our behavior. We have little bullying behavior as our children strive to care for each other and their feelings. We no longer whine about our students’ misbehavior. We teach them how to act and give them pride for doing so. My teachers are happier than ever and the control of their classrooms is done in a respectful way. Our office referrals were greatly reduced when our teachers started using Spencer Henry’s strategies. Feel free to contact me or any of my teachers for further testimony.”
Judy Bragg, Principal, Holiman Elementary School, TX

“I want to let you know that Heritage is having a great year and I believe it is, in a large part, because of the work you did with us this past year. “Spencerisms” are constantly being quoted by my staff."
Dave Toopes, Principal, Heritage, OH

“I would like to thank you for your wonderful staff development. Often, after staff development, we hear negative comments such as, ‘That was a waste of our time.’ Not this time! I now hear, ‘The best in-service we ever had!’ ‘I’ve already used his ideas, and they work.’ I thank you for your presentation. It was humorous, exhilarating and chock full of useful strategies. My office referrals have reduced significantly. Thank you!”

“I am writing to thank you again for the wonderful presentation you gave to our staff last summer. The seminar which you conducted was far and away the most effective program I have encountered in my twenty-five years in education. Your common sense, practical approach to improving classroom management, has inspired my teaching staff in many different and positive ways throughout the school year. I am not exaggerating when I say the transformation which has occurred in our school as a result of your workshop has been nothing short of remarkable.”
D. Mark Jones, Principal Diley Middle School, Pickerington, OH

“I came looking for tools and ended up with a new bag of clubs. You have a wonderful sense of humor. The day flew by so fast. Your ideas are practical. Your presentation was fantastic!”
